Duo Series 2018 – Erik Friedlander

Note Production’s innovative Duo Series is back this Autumn. This year we have the great American cellist and composer & veteran of NYC’s Downtown scene, Erik Friedlander, collaborating with some of Ireland’s finest contemporary artists. Over three nights at the Fumbally Stables a series of creative encounters will generate a whole range of new and exciting work. View full series

Erik Friedlander

Cellist Erik Friedlander started studying music at an early age, beginning at 5 with guitar, and then at 8, cello lessons. He grew up in a house filled with music, as his father, an avid music lover, made countless mixtapes which played daily in their home. Erik spent his twenties honing his skills as a player and an improviser and quickly became a sought after studio musician, performing on the Downtown music scene and with artists as diverse as The Mountain Goats, John Zorn, Dave Douglas and Courtney Love. Erik's desire to actively participate in the swirl of music styles he was surrounded by led him to find new ways to play the cello and drives his solo work which is varied and unusual.

“Mr. Friedlander, an ingenious cellist who makes an art of soulful rusticity,“ NYTimes

"Erik Friedlander can do things with a cello that should have a reasonable listener fearing for her life," says Pitchfork. "Rostropovich one second and Rottweiler the next."

Sean Carpio (drums) & Cian Nugent (guitar)

Improvisations for electric guitar and drum set channeling pan-global traditional music, spiritual jazz and cosmic rock. Cian Nugent & Sean Carpio are a year old. In that time they have performed at Hunter's Moon festival, Eiriocht Festival, and featured on Mojo, and WFMU. They will perform their first tour of the west coast of Ireland this winter.

Sean McErlaine – woodwind instruments

Seán Mac Erlaine is a Dublin-based woodwind instrumentalist, composer and music producer, recognised as one of Ireland's most forward-thinking creative musicians. Seán's work intersects folk, free improvisation, jazz and traditional music. He also collaborates with a range of non-musical artists particularly in theatre and radio.

Seán maintains a busy performance schedule in Ireland and internationally working with a hugely diverse range of musicians and artists reflecting his own versatility and interest in cross-platform work. He has performed with leading musical figures including Jan Bang, Bill Frisell, David Toop, Ernst Reijseger, The Smith Quartet, Hayden Chisholm, Eivind Aarset, Caoimhín Ó Raghallaigh, Frank Gratkowski, Ronan Guilfoyle, Iarla O'Lionaird, Valgeir Sigurðsson, Damo Suzuki and many more. He has also performed as a special guest with Detroit techno legends Underground Resistance, and The Gloaming.

Caoimhin O'Raghallaigh – hardanger d’amore

Caoimhin makes music on a 10-string fiddle called the hardanger d'amore, and travels the world as a solo musician, in duos with Dan Trueman, Mick O'Brien and Brendan Begley, and as a member of bands The Gloaming and This is How we Fly.

He has performed on some of the most beautiful stages in the world, including the Sydney Opera House, the Royal Albert Hall and the Lincoln Center, although some of his favourite performances have been much more intimate and ephemeral events, special one-off things invented by friends. He lives in Dublin, and loves it for the place and the people.

He has sixteen recordings to his name so far, ranging from quite traditional to experimental and enjoys both genres equally, playing the old music that he loves, and exploring the region where traditional music begins to disintegrate
