For the second of Note's series focussing on the work of Irish pianist Paul G. Smyth, tonight's duo with LA-based John Wiese promises to be something special. Wiese's work with live electronics has seen him collaborate with artists as diverse as GX Jupitter-Larsen, Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Merzbow, Evan Parker, Smegma, Kevin Drumm, Yellow Swans, No Age and C. Spencer Yeh, as well as performing in the 52nd Venice Biennale with artist Nico Vascellari.

In the late 1990s, Wiese moved from St. Louis, Missouri to the West Coast to study graphic design at the California Institute of the Arts, and soon became a notable contributor to Bastard Noise.

His ongoing projects include LHD and Sissy Spacek, with plenty of freelance work with many artists as diverse as GX Jupitter-Larsen, Sunn O))), Wolf Eyes, Merzbow, Evan Parker, Smegma, Kevin Drumm, Yellow Swans, Cattle Decapitation, No Age, C. Spencer Yeh (Burning Star Core) and Kommissar Hjuler und Frau.

Wiese toured extensively, covering Europe, Scandinavia and Australia as a member of Sunn O))). He toured the UK as part of the Free Noise tour (a tentet including Evan Parker, C. Spencer Yeh, Yellow Swans, etc.). He also toured the United States along- alongside Wolf Eyes, and recently performed in the 52nd Venice Biennale with artist Nico Vascellari.

Paul G. Smyth

For the last 20 years, pianist Paul G. Smyth has been carving a unique furrow in Ireland’s cultural landscape. Parallel to his involvement with The Jimmy Cake (described by the Irish Times as “the most powerful musical force in Ireland”), Smyth has also set himself apart as a singular voice in Europe’s vigorous improvised music scene.

Since touring with Charles Gayle in 1999, he has worked with such luminaries as Derek Bailey, Evan Parker, Keiji Haino, Barry Guy, Wadada Leo Smith, John Russell, Chris Corsano, Lol Coxhill, Charles Hayward, John Butcher, John Edwards, Hannah Marshall, Alan Wilkinson, Mark Sanders and Damo Suzuki, among many others, been a member of synth trio Boys Of Summer (“the sound of John Carpenter being buried alive” - Le Cool Magazine), a featured composer in the National Concert Hall, written music for theatre, and performed in 17 countries.
