Iarla Ó’Lionáird is one of Ireland's most acclaimed singers. For this concert he is joined by guitarist Steve Cooney and pianist Graham Henderson for a concert that moves from traditional music to Ó’Lionáird's much lauded solo work from his albums Seven Steps to Mercy and Invisible Fields.
Iarla O'Lionáird grew up and learned his craft in the musical heartland of Cúil Aodha in the West Cork Gaeltacht. Iarla Ó’Lionáird's acclaimed solo work acclaimed work fuses the traditions of sean-nós with modern electronic music and soundscapes. His latest solo project and album Invisible Fields melds the ancient echoes of sean-nós with the future sounds of today’s sonic explorers. He is best known as singer with multi-million-selling and twice Grammy-nominated, Afro-Celt Soundsystem. Iarla has sung in his unique style for audiences across the globe from Carnegie Hall in New York to the Royal Opera House in London, from Cape Town to Moscow, Rome and Tokyo. His many television appearances include among others the Later with Jools Holland Show for the BBC and The David Letterman Show in the USA. His music has also appeared on many film soundtracks including The Gangs of New York and Hotel Rwanda. Most recently he has collaborated with Gavin Bryars on a the full-length Note Productions commission.
Born in Melbourne, Australia, Steve Cooney started his professional musical career at the age of 17, playing for a while in the US before returning home, where he was in a number of rock and folk/rock bands. In 1981 he bought a one-way ticket to Ireland, from where his ancestors had come, where he busked and worked odd jobs for a few months, before joining Stockton's Wing as bassist. Since then he has popped up all over the place, with a major contribution to Sharon Shannon's first album, and performances and recordings with Dermot Byrne, Altan, Martin Hayes and others. Multi-instrumentalist Graham Henderson is one of the most sought-after musician's at work in Ireland today. He has recorded and performed live with Moving Hearts, Donal Lunny, Sinead O'Connor, Paul Brady and Altan.
